It is undoubtedly the case that people and their life have constantly suffered from either voluntary or passive smoking, especially from smoking in enclosed public spaces. Whether it should be banned or not has sparked a controversial debate in the community. I contend that government should implement practical policies in combating public smoking, because of the detrimental effects exerted on the local community and its people.

This would become a potential health risk to both smokers and passive smokers in the long run. In addition, there could be a high risk of sparking a fire from a dropped cigarette, if good attention is not paid to it. For instance, the bush areas in Melbourne often easily catch fire in drought seasons, and it could be devastating to the already grave situation, when smoking is allowed in such inflammable open spaces.

Although most people are happy with the ban, there could be some unexpected downsides to it. Many people say that some public places now smell even worse than before because there is no smoke to cover up other odours. Also, in some areas, people are finding it difficult to sleep at night as a result of smokers being forced outside, where voice and conversation is not contained. However, the health issues such as respiratory diseases and pneumonia induced by passive smoking is more of a problem than these side effects.

In conclusion, there are a variety of factors that have led to the call for a ban on smoking in public places. Except for some minor side effects, the improvement in health and reduced risk of fire make enforcing this policy more than worthwhile.
