Chemicals in food production, do you think the advantages of using chemicals outweigh disadvantages?
Chemicals, such as pesticides and drugs, have been used in food production by almost all nations for many years. This phenomenon is not only restricted to developing countries, but is also proliferated among developed regions too. A criticism often levelled these days is that the adverse consequences brought about by high doses of chemicals can be detrimental to people and their health, this is despite it being a stimulant to food produce. Therefore, I contend that the advantages of using such supplements are outweighed by the fact that it is harmful to the health of people.
Admittedly, the chemicals consumed in agriculture indeed accrue many benefits, especially in dramatically production and ensure a better quality of produce. In animal farming, drugs such as antibiotics and hormones are greatly helpful in boosting the growth of cows, cattle, chicken and many other animals for people to eat. More importantly, it can also cut down on feed requirement to save money for raising this stock. As a result, relying on varieties of chemicals in food production is such a common matter nowadays.
However, being largely used in planting and animal farming, chemicals such as pesticides, antibiotics and hormones, can be seriously dangerous and harmful to human’s health. This is mainly because these extra addictive are mostly toxic and irritant, and the over-intake of them in the daily diet of general people will certainly expose them to related health issues, such as allergic reaction, breast cancer, heart disease and many other undesirable illness. For example, eating meat and other unacceptable high volume of hormones can lead to side effects including breast enlargement and ovarian cysts. Moreover, the over-size of antibiotics in fruits and vegetables may increase the possibility of breeding antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria for people who eat these foods. Thus, the hazardous effects induced by these chemicals residues in food are the major concern for people today.
In conclusion, the disadvantages of adding chemicals are more than the advantages, a reliable and high quality of food supply is more of a challenge, but is definitely welcomed in mankinds’future living.
