How have the large animal populations changed? Well, in 2000, if you added up everything I had in that chart antelope, buffalo, elephants, hippos, everything, fewer than 1000 of them combined. The census last year 71,000, little more than a decade, several fold changes in most of those populations from 100 elephants to be about 600, same similar changes in hippo etc. Pretty dramatic, right? Well the habitats there, the food is there, the water is there, the place had been emptied by us. And now those populations are booming. I am also going to share with you, well last time you asked about lions, and at 2015 Counter, there’re 66 lions in Gorongosa, which is a little bit of concern, the proportions of other things to lions are not what they are historically and lions are tricky you can’t just introduce lions coz you know the prides fight and things like that, but you understand what, you understand from what I told you before, carnivores are really important in systems in terms of the whole regime of how animal numbers are controlled particularly the smaller prey and we all know that just lions are the only known large predators, no wild dogs, no leopard etc until three weeks ago. This is a shot from a motion-capture camera this place, there are dozens of these cameras all over Gorongosa and, for the first time in decades, that’s a leopard in Gorongosa National Park, probably migrated in from one of the adjancent areas and evidently several more have been spoted since then, but this is dated September 2nd like I got sent this photo by Greek car. Someone excited that a little more than excited, but there are leopard in Gorgongosa and now a few leopard we know in Gorongose probably these are breeding pair, so the carnivores are coming back, and diversity of carnivores is there, so it’s quite helpful.
