PTE Re-tell Lecture

In a general way what can and should grow, well infinite growth of education and skills learning is entirely possible. Most research doesn’t cost the environment anything. Much of health care not all of them but a great deal because a lot of it is based on knowledge. Imponderables like greater justice more democracy, more sharing, more social cohesion, more friendship more love. What can’t grow and shouldn’t grow anymore: western type productivist culture, highly dependent on fossil fuels as important food will become more expensive. We had a preview in the food rights of 2000 aids, and now food prices in 2011 are back at approximately the same level. The water supply, that’s not going to grow, we have to protect very carefully but we have. It’s becoming ever scarcer as water tables are mined, glaciers are melting and pollution is increasing. The throughput of non-renewable energy and materials, that can’t grow anymore. I apologize to the translators I don’t have a good word for this in French, what throughput means in English is the quantity and the quality of the energy and the materials that are going through the economic machine and the waste that they produce. This cannot increase. The good news is that we know already how to reduce this throughput, techniques exist and it is possible to do this. Unfortunately, we’re not doing nearly enough in that direction. But in a general way we can and must do more with less.
