In some sense, everything that we’re doing in the string theory is an attempt to understand singularities. The reason why there is a singularity inside a black hole that the conventional framework of physics can’t address is because we don’t have to put gravity into quantum mechanics together. I mean when a star collapses, you certainly need a theory of gravity, star were so massive. So when a black hole forms, you certainly need a theory of gravity, but when that star collapses to an infinitesimal speck, the singularity, the centre of a black hole, you certainly need a quantum mechanics to come to bear too. If you can’t put gravity and quantum mechanics together, you have no tools to address the singularity, so our hope is that string theory by putting gravity and quantum mechanics together will allow us to address singularities and that notion has been realised that there are certain kinds of singularities, not the black hole singularity or big bang singularity, but others more mild singularities that string theory has addressed, so we are heading in a positive direction in terms of realising the dream of curing singularities through our understanding of string theory.
