PTE Re-tell Lecture

We don’t have any meteorites for mercury. Mercury is too close to the sun. Any meteorite like it flung off of mercury will not come back out to the earth. It’ll probably go into the sun instead. So we don’t think we have any meteorites mercury. But what we can do the same sort of thing. So this is the messenger mission that orbited mercury. And based on their data they were able to determine that there is a solid iron course for mercury, a molten core with iron-sulphur and silicon and then this FES layer. Now you’ll notice that mercury is mostly core. Why is mercury mostly quarter versus the earth which is core plus this huge mantle? What do you think back to those giant impacts that I showed you for the earth, for example? It’s thought that there was a giant impact that hit mercury so hard that its mantle got stripped off of it and just flew into the sun. And so the only thing that’s basically left is this giant core of a planet.
