PTE Re-tell Lecture

The first successful discovery of a planetary mass object around a star like the Sun didn’t occur until 1995. This object was called 51 Pegasi B, the name of the stars 51 Peg we could put lowercase “b” next to it indicating there’s a planet. And this was exactly what Otto Struve said we should be looking for, but no one had actually looked for. This was an object which was as massive as Jupiter, so we expected to find it several times the distance away from its co-stars earlist of the Sun and instead this object was found 20 times closer to its star, where the people who studied at that time how planets should have formed from a physics-based theoretical perspective said that type of planet shouldn’t be there, but it was and this is another recurring theme at exoplanets. The expectation that what we were going to find in the galaxy based upon our own solar system has led us astray, it causes us to look for things that may or may not be there and instead we should be open to the idea of different types of systems could be found wherever we have a new way of looking for.
