PTE Re-tell Lecture

What I find fascinated is where companies are moving across different industries to solve problems in an innovative way. Let me look at British Sugar for a moment. British sugar is a mix sugar outs of sugarcane, so they decided to become a power generator. They used so much power. They bought a huge gas turbine of exactly the same technology as on a plane. And generated power to drive that factory and at the same time, they collect the heat to cook the sugar which is neat and then someone had another idea. Here is a jet of air which is coming out at maybe several hundred kilometers per hour, full of water, it’s warm and contains carbon dioxide. So British gas decided to build a huge pipe on the back of the gas turbine, and they ran this pipe two and half kilometers, down the road to the largest greenhouse in Europe. In that green house, grow 35 million tomatoes every single year. The day after they connected this pipe to the green house. There was an explosion of growth in the tomato factory. And now the number of tomatoes they produce has increased from 35 million to 70 million. Every one of you here has probably eaten a tomato built from carbon dioxide from the waste of a gas turbine, used to produce electricity to cook sugar for British sugar. Why I like that idea is because it’s an example of tens of thousands of companies that are moving from one sector to another. So food company becomes an electricity manufacturer and we get a car company that becomes a power generator and so on.
