PTE Re-tell Lecture

Can photography allow us to see the past? Or is such talk just metaphorical? Philosopher Kendall Walton thinks it can. He argues through unretouched photos, we actually see there are subjects indirectly of course, like seeing around a corner in a mirror, or seeing an amoeba through a microscope. Let’s say you look at an amoeba through a microscope and film what you see. If you watch the film an hour later, don’t you see the same amoeba again? Of course, it might have died or divided before you play the film back, so you don’t see it as it is, but as it was when the camera was running, but you still see it, don’t you? Walton says yes, cameras are the devices that extend our power of vision, like mirrors and microscopes if he’s right. You are not just looking at an image of me now, you are actually seeing me as I was on the September 30th, 2013. In other words, you are seeing the past.
