PTE Re-tell Lecture

Well when two protons collide at a very high energy, there is a lot of debris created. Now that description is a little bit loose, what’s really happening is the energy of the incoming proteins is used through E= MC squared through Einstein’s famous equation to create particles of variety of different masses because energy is the raw material added which mass and matter can be created, so when a huge amount of energy is being concentrated in a very small location, that energy can create a whole range, a whole spray of different particles. And indeed if you look at the data that the detectors are able to see, you see particles flying out this way and that from these collisions. The challenge is within that data to find a signature that among the particles created is the Higgs particle. We understand from our math the way in which Higgs particle will decay, the way would fall apart into other particles, and in this big spray of debris, we try to find those very specific processes that would indicate that the Higgs particle was there for a fleeting moment.
