Right now there are groups of people trying to teach AI ethics, that is there is an entire almost kind of a field of study right now. There’s a group at Google, there are some groups in UC that are going through this process of how do you teach ethics to an AI and the first immediate chore was to teach the self-driving cars to get over the trolley problem which is self-driving cars driving on the road, there is a crash and it could either turn into the barrier and maybe injure the passenger or it could turn over this way into the traffic and hurt the pedestrian. So the question is which one should favor ‘cause it has to turn somewhere. We give ourselves a pass, we say oh we don’t think about it, we have time, it was just an accident and so we don’t hold ourselves responsible for making that kind of decision, but the AI is going to be held responsible that kind of program has to be thought about before, so there is a very logical sense in an approach, it can program those decisions in. And they’re very very difficult ethical programs, but what we discovered is in fact that humans are pretty lousy in terms of ethical consistency, we are not very consistent, we are not very deep, we are not very logical. And we give ourselves a great pass ‘cause we think that we’re pretty sophisticated ethically. We’re actually not and so I think it’s happening very very fast that this attempt this need to actually put into these devices, these machines who are making decisions, and it is very clear that they do make decisions today that we give they’re sort of boundaries, there is values that are being taught to them. And what I observed is in fact they are going to make us better ethically ourselves, we’re going to learn from this process of teaching them. They will come back to us just like we often become better people as we teach our children, these are my children and in the process of teaching them, or having to make this framework that we can pass on to them, we will actually become better ourselves.
