The central lesson of quantum mechanics relative to our previous understanding in classical mechanics is that the way we describe reality needs to be changed. The older description of reality that comes down to us from Newton is tell me where all of the objects are, all the particles and tell me how they’re moving. And that is the very definition of reality from what you can determine how reality will change over time. Quantum mechanics says you have to give up that picture, however, comfortable and intuitive it might be. What you really need to describe is give me the probabilities for where the particles are. That’s it. Give me that data and then I can use the new equations of the quantum mechanics to determine how these probabilities will change over time, allow me to predict at any given moment the likelihood that particles are here or there, or another particle is there or there. That’s the new picture of the reality, probabilities that evolve over time.
