PTE Re-tell Lecture

No one knows what anyone else is doing in science. The system is set up to incentivize secrecy. Why? It’s slower? It’s slower because we don’t what other people are doing? And that means we can’t find optimal collaborators, we can’t find people who have the other key piece of the puzzle. We fall into the same stupid traps that other people are falling into, but don’t share because no one publishes their negative results. It’s less fun you never know whether you are wasting your time ‘cause someone else is doing exactly the same thing. Students living in fear of being scooped by another lab have their career attacked. It’s less trusted by the people.  Why should people trust us when we insist on running our experiments behind closed-doors? The perhaps most relevant is the box, that is I would argue that closed-door science is more dangerous because it means we don’t know what other people are doing. And so the people who do care about potentially dangerous technologies have no way of knowing when someone else is working in any area that might be dangerous.
