Hey Peggy Mckee here trying to help you with those very tough job interview questions.
Here is one. Why do you want to switch from an academic field to a business or industry? Now I ‘ve actually dealt with this question a lot because in my recruiting we recruited a lot of people from academia into business and industry organizations, so I can tell you that they’re just looking to understand that you know that those are two very different cultures and that you like and embrace what the business industry culture is versus academia. In academia there is not the urgency, there is not the customer focus, there’s not the high level of energies, it’s different. And things like tenure are more appreciated in academia when you get over into business and industry it really is about what have you done for me lately okay? And it’s urgent but the great thing is if you’re a real go or if you’re someone who really is productive and has a lot to offer, in industry typically you’re going to make more money. You’re going to be shown much more recognition; you’re going to have more opportunities to grow and move up the chain rapidly so that’s why you should say that. Of course you don’t want to start with hey I want to go here because this hour is going to be larger. You want to say look I want to be I want to be recognized for what I can do in the organization I want to grow rapidly and I want to be rewarded personally, professionally and financially for it. In academia they don’t do this and that’s a great answer.
