PTE Re-tell Lecture

PTE Re-tell Lecture

A couple of points. First of all, small tomatoes are better than big tomatoes. And so if you go to the supermarket, really want some of them taste good. Get a cherry tomato, don’t buy those big monster tomatoes. They have more flavour. Consistently we see the small tomatoes have more flavour than the larger tomatoes. Though the very best tomato up their tree Roma, that’s pretty much the best we’ve ever grown in terms of ratings. But down to bottom is something called Matt wild cherry and I see people growing this all the time. You see it in magazines. People say oh yeah I grow this time thank and they’re terrible. In fact, they are disgusting. The biggest, the best big tomato we’ve ever put through our consumer panels is something called the Brandywine. I’m pretty sure many of you have heard of brandy wines and maybe probably even grown them. But down at the bottom I did a sabbatical and friends and they said oh yeah in France of course where everything ‘s better here and we grow great tomatoes, while Marmont is a French variety. Well it’s the worst tomato we’ve ever put in our consumer panels. The point being that there is a huge range that works to our advantage because we can exploit that range to understand human responses and to understand genetics.
