Never before has technology been so emphasized as in this century. Under the influence of technology, many people argue that we are not as social as before simply because of the technological innovation whilst others disagree. Personally, it is my humble opinion that we tend to be more social.
The social network brought by technological advances has enabled us to communicate more with others. For example, Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, one after another, have empowered individuals to chat with others in an inconceivably easy way. Ironically, a seemingly introvert person may have over 1000 followers on the Internet.
Those arguing that we are not as social as before may think that some gripping online games have stolen our time and therefore, we do not communicate with others, especially our family members as often as before. This assertion seems reasonable given that we do not communicate with our parents that often. However, they are ignoring the fact that those game players are socializing with other players as well when they are playing games.
The nature of the Internet has enabled those timid/shy people to be more courageous in voicing their minds. Those shy netizens may leave some funny and hilarious comments below a YouTube video or they may post some thought-provoking articles on their Facebook page simply for the reason that the Internet can ensure their confidentiality.
To recapitulate, though the alluring games brought about by technological innovations may have stolen our time and deprived our opportunity to socialize with our friends and family members, we are, in a very real sense, more social because the anonymous nature of the Internet has encouraged shy netizens to socialize with others and because there are more social platforms for us to express ourselves.
