Our first story this April 25th involves alleged human trafficking. The U.S. Department of HomelandSecurity defines human trafficking as modern day slavery. It involves deceiving people, defrauding them or forcing them into a type of labor or prostitution.
The DHS says trafficking brings billions of dollars of yearly profit to people who illegally trade human lives. And according to the Global SlaveryIndex, some form of slavery traps more than 48 million, men, women and children, in 167 countries.
In Brazil, South America’s largest and most populated country, slavery was officially abolished in 1888. But like in so many other countries, including the U.S., human trafficking continues inBrazil. In one area where people are taking advantage of is in agriculture. It accounts for more than 6 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. More than 15 percent of its labor force.

Tomorrow marks 100 days since U.S. PresidentDonald Trump was inaugurated. It’s considered amilestone for an American leader. And thepresident is expected to attend a rally inHarrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday to talk abouthis accomplishments. Like the three previouspresidents, Mr. Trump has gotten mixed reviews onhis first 100 days in office, but he’s gotten lower approval ratings.
In a CNN/ORC poll conducted between April 22nd and April 25th, 44 percent of respondentssaid they approve of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president, 54 percent saidthey disapprove. The findings were similar in several other national polls.
On the issue of national security, 50 percent of respondents approve of the president’s work, 48 percent disapprove. That number has held steady in recent months.
For health care policy, 36 percent approve of the job the president is doing, 61 percentdisapprove. That number took a hit after Republicans in Congress failed to pass the first versionof their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, though they say they’re working on acompromise.
On immigration, 41 percent approve, 57 percent disapprove. The president’s executive ordertemporarily banning immigration from certain countries is current tied up in court.
But regarding the Supreme Court, the president’s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill avacancy was a success. He was narrowly confirmed by the Senate and is now seated on thebench.
And on the economy, 59 percent said U.S. economic conditions are good, 41 percent saidthey’re poor. The stock market has continued to climb despite hitting some bumps.
