In the 1800s, through a great deal of experimentation, Michael Faraday realized that the right way to think about the electric influences that he had been studying was to introduce his idea of an electric field, which is kind of like a mist or essence that communicates the force associated with electricity ultimately in the hands of Maxwell, the electron magnetic force. This idea of a field that can in some sense exert an influence associated with a given force at some distant location is one of the key ideas of modern physics. When you try to meld the idea of a field, of a force field with quantum mechanics, then you get quantum field theory, the quantum description of force fields that are at work in environment around us.
