It’s very interesting. I had a summer student last summer who wanted to know how our brains are different when they were talking face to face and when they were texting each other. And I started this with a notion that oh texting didn’t really involve much of the social brain. And what we are going to see is this active social areas of the brain when we face to face, but we are not going to see very much in texting, well I was plenty wrong. It often times students show the professors are wrong and this was one of them. The texting actually involved a lot more what we called the temporal parietal junctions, it’s the sweet spot of the brain that we think it’s sensitive to the social interactions. It turns out that in all the people we are texting each other they involve in this very special part of the brain. We interpreted this as a greater involvement of theory of mind, ways of projecting yourself into another person, but anyway so the moral is we don’t really know very much about what goes on the brain and social interactions we have an awful lot to learn.
