Relativity to a physicist means that there are aspects of the world that can only even be defined, only make sense by comparison. But the thing that’s really worth emphasizing is that when Einstein developed relativity, he really thought a better name would be variance theory, not relativity theory because at the heart of relativity, it’s finding those things which are rare that don’t require a comparison for their definition, for instance the speed of light is a good example, whether you’re measuring it, whether I’m measuring it, whether anybody’s measuring it, according to relativity as confirmed by experiment, we will always get the same answer, 186,000 miles per second. It’s not a relative notion and that’s surprising, but it’s those invariance, those things don’t change, the Einstein leveraged to understand how other things in the world do change.
