The double slit experiment is in many ways, the heart and soul of quantum mechanics. Richard Fineman was fond of saying that in essence, if you understand the double slit experience, then you’ve really understood the essence of the new quantum paradigm. The experiment is pretty simple. You have a gun, that fires some projectiles towards a barrier that has two slits in it. And you’d expected that if these projectiles, you say bullets. That the bullets will either go through the left slit or the right slit and leave a mark on a distance screen that aligns with the two openings and if you do fire bullets that it just what happens. The remarkable thing is that if you replace bullets by little tiny particles, like electrons or photons. Then you fire those tiny bullets through the two slits, they don’t just wind up in locations that align with the openings. Instead, when you look at where the electrons end up at the distant detector screen. They wind up in a very peculiar pattern. They wind up in a variety of strips, which called interference pattern. They land locations that an ordinary bullet would never land, so the big question is how is it that the electrons hit that screen in so many different locations than an ordinary bullet would hit. Try to answer that question takes us to the new ideas of the quantum physics.
