Studying medieval witch-hunting and demonology helps us to make sense of human evil. Persistent gender bias to this day is easier to understand when we know its history and its nuances. For instance, most witches were women, but a quarter of those accused were in fact men. In some places, most were men, so it’s complicated. Witch hunting was a form of mass moral panic, and studying such panics in the past helps us to understand and analyse moral panics today, such as the ritual satanic abuse accusations in the 1980s, which turned out to be bogus but still ruined hundreds of lives. We need historical perspective and critical analysis of our worst behaviour and our best behaviour as a species to develop fully as human beings.
