If a theorist were to spend his or her life in isolation away from experimental data, it would be hard to imagine ultimately doing work that would be relevant to the real world, so what most of our theorists do is while we spend a good deal of our time working on abstract mathematical equations, we constantly look over to our experimental colleagues to give us the data that ultimately we want those mathematical equations to describe. So for instance the Large Hadron Collider, this big new accelerator that is undergoing experiments now in Switzerland. The data from that machine is one that theorist will be pouring over for many many years. It’s data that the experimental team that built that facility and undertake the experiments will be gathering and putting together.
