It’s a deep question whether there is ultimately going to be a final theory of how the universe works at the most fundamental level, the history of physics seems to suggested every time we think we have fully figured it out that understanding leads to deeper questions, then lead to deeper theories and the cycle continues. But from a reductionist standpoint, you can imagine that as we probe the universe on ever smaller scales, we’ll get to a point where there is no sense of going any further. We find the fundamental ingredients, we understand fundamental forces. We embody that understanding into equations and then we start to build up, to understand how that fundamental understanding gives rise to the world that we are familiar with, planets, and people, and stars and galaxies, that’s one possibility, not everybody agrees with that, some people think that will be an endless search. We’ll go deeper and deeper and never will that journey come to an end. My own feeling is that certain chapters of discovery can conclude and we may one day understand the fundamental forces and fundamental ingredients, but only time will tell.
