No one’s actually seen the quantum foam. It is an issue that arises from our mathematical investigations, putting together quantum mechanics and Einstein’s theories and trying to make them both apply in the ultra-micro scope domain and the foam arises on really tiny scales, according to math, ten to the minus thirty-three centimeters, the so-called Planck scale. That is billions and billions times smaller than even the scales we can probe the large Hadron Collider, so it’s really tiny scales, but because of the foam, we recognize that the naive melding the gravity quantum mechanics doesn’t work and that’s launched us to develop other approaches like string theory, which try to count the quantum foam and at least on paper string theory is able to do that.
