I study surveillance, which includes things such as video cameras, spies, eavesdropping, biometrics, drones, data valence and a list of other things that seems to grow daily. One of the most important developments in surveillance since the 911 terrorist attacks, has been that surveillance has become more asymmetrical, by that I mean, the organisations have been able to gather ever more information than both citizens or organisation themselves have been able to use state security previsions or cooperate secret legislation to hide from the public how much information they collect about what and who they share it with. And the surveillance is ultimately about power over individuals or groups being watched. The surveillance asymmetry is one of the most important and unsettling developments in the contemporary operation of organisational power.
