Scientific discoveries can be challenging and hard to understand, but art can help. For example, on this work by Merilyn Oliver from the recent perceptions of promise exhibition. The artist created a sculpture of a human figure using data from a CT scan. This evocative and innovative artwork points to the way new imaging technologies are transforming the way we perceive our own bodies today. MRI and CT scans provide new insights into our anatomy and physiology, but can also foster anxiety as the technology challenges preconceived ideas about the ways our bodies function. Marilyn speaks to both this sense of hope and uncertainty by creating a work that is seductive and its formal and material qualities, but which also confronts the viewers with a body that has been split open.
