Remain/look之类系动词后面，到底加形容词还是副词？

有同学会说：这道题我会！以前学过，系动词后面加形容词。

没错，我们看例句：

He remains calm. 他保持平静。

He remains silent.他保持安静。

但是我们看Harry Potter里面的原句remain后面加的是副词grudgingly：

Harry and Ron wanted to go with her, but their mountain of homework had reached an alarming height again, so they remained grudgingly in the common room.

类似的，还有look. 以前我们都说look 后面加形容词，比如：

He looks angry. 他看上去生气了。

He looks sad. 他看上去很伤心。

但是我们看Harry Potter里面的原句：

Harry thought, licking it as they watched a gorilla scratching its head who looked remarkably like Dudley, except that it wasn’t blond.

Harry moved in front of the tank and looked intently at the snake.

It winked.Harry stared. Then he looked quickly around to see if anyone was watching.

这是怎么回事呢？难道作者用错了吗？

当然不是。

原来remain或look这样的系动词后面加形容词还是副词主要取决于是修饰谁。

如果修饰的是主语，表示主语的特征或补充，那就是表语，后面就用形容词；

如果修饰的是动词或介词，做状语（adverbial）,那么就需要用副词(adverb).
