Appointment for Australian citizenship – Interview With Standard Test

I am writing to advise that you have been booked for an Interview With Standard Test in relation to your application for Australian citizenship. This is your opportunity to demonstrate that you meet the legal requirements for Australian citizenship.

Your citizenship appointment will be in two parts: a citizenship interview and a citizenship test. At the citizenship interview, you will be interviewed regarding your identity, your identity documents and your eligibility to sit the citizenship test. If you meet the interview requirements, you will then be permitted to sit the citizenship test. Please refer to the section below on What we request you bring.

Note:

• Ensure you make parking arrangements for the duration of your appointment.
• There are no childcare facilities at the appointment place

What we request you bring

Along with this letter, we request that you bring the original version of the following documents to your appointment. The Documents table will assist you to identify acceptable documents. Photocopies or certified copies of documents are not acceptable. We request that you bring:

• at least three documents that collectively show your photograph, signature, current residential address, date of birth, birth name and gender
• Proof of name change, if applicable
• any other identity documents issued by another government that you consider will assist in verifying your identity
• evidence of when you first arrived in Australia and your present country of citizenship
• the documents that were submitted with your application
• documents for any children under 16 years of age included in your application
• official translation to accompany any documents which are not in English (see Translating your documents)
• any other documents that we have requested you to provide.

Documents table

If you do not bring the required original documents, your appointment will need to be rescheduled and you will not be permitted to sit the citizenship test. Another appointment time may not be available for several months.

Translating your documents

If your documents are not in English, you must provide official translations.

If you applied in Australia, you must use a translator accredited by the National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). Refer to the NAATI website www.naati.com.au

If you applied from outside Australia, contact our office in the country that issued the document for advice on acceptable translators. Contact details for our overseas offices can be found on our website at: www.border.gov.au/about/contact/offices-locations

Arriving for your appointment

• Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment. Check-in is not permitted earlier than this.
• Collect a ticket from the kiosk by scanning the barcode at the top of this letter.

The citizenship interview

At your interview we will:

• discuss your citizenship application
• check your original documents and
• take your photograph (do not wear coloured contact lenses)
• assess your eligibility to sit the test

The citizenship test

The citizenship test is conducted in English, consists of 20 multiple-choice questions and is computer-based. You will have 45 minutes to complete the test. If you do not complete the test within that time, a result will be given based on the questions you have completed. No extensions of time will be granted.

The test will be “closed book”. During the test:

• you are not allowed to refer to the resource book (‘Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond’) or study aids (including electronic equipment such as cameras or smartphones); and
• you cannot communicate with anyone (by phone or otherwise), other than the test administrator.

If you fail to comply with the above conditions, the test administrator may determine that you have not successfully completed the test.

After your appointment

After your appointment, the assessment process of your application will continue. You may be asked to provide further information or documents, such as additional overseas police clearance certificates. You may be asked to attend another interview. Once the assessment process is complete, we will advise you in writing of the outcome of your application.

Personal identifiers

Under the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 (the Australian Citizenship Act), the department has the authority to collect a range of personal identifiers from persons applying for Australian citizenship. Personal identifiers include your photograph and signature. The department collects your personal identifiers primarily for identity and document fraud purposes. This letter is a formal request for your personal identifiers.

Once provided, your personal identifiers will be stored electronically in the department’s computer system and may be shared with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Australian passport purposes and National Police Checking Service for the purpose of conducting a National Police check in relation to your application for Australian citizenship. Your personal identifiers may be used in court or tribunal proceedings relating to you.

Your personal information (which includes personal identifiers) is protected by law under the Privacy Act 1988. Under the Privacy Act 1988, you have the right to make a complaint to the Australian Information Commissioner about the handling of personal information.

The Freedom of Information Act 1982 gives you access to certain information and documents held by the Australian Government and its agencies. You have a right to seek access to that information or documents, and to seek amendment of records containing personal information that is incomplete, incorrect, out of date or misleading.

Your citizenship application contains a Privacy notice detailing how the Department may collect, use and disclose personal information. This is applicable to all the information provided for the purpose of assessing your citizenship application and any children included within your application.

Update us

You must let us know about any changes to your circumstances as soon as possible. This includes changes to your name, contact details, address or information about children included in your application.

• For online applications, update your details by completing the online forms available through ImmiAccount.
• For paper applications, contact us quoting your name, date of birth and client ID. For a change of address or passport details use Form 929 Change of address and/or passport details available on our website www.border.gov.au/allforms
